Cultivating Creativity through Art
November 27, 2007 (Leadership Café Session) By Eric Booth
To succeed in the 21st century, today’s students will need to be prepared to think creatively and be able
to exercise intellectual curiosity. Eric Booth, actor, businessman, teacher, and author of The Everyday
Work of Art: Awakening the Extraordinary in Your Daily Life, will present a compelling message about the
power that art holds in the lives of young people. During this session, participants will learn how to
cultivate and enhance the creative processes within our students. Booth founded the Juilliard School’s
art-in-education program and serves as a consultant to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Education Department. Note: Participants will have an opportunity to extend their learning with a “Nuts
& Bolts” session with Eric Booth from 9:30 – 11:45 a.m. at an additional cost of $25.

Engaging Kinesthetic Learners in the
Curriculum: An Arts Integration Strategy
January 16, 2008 (Arts Workshop) By Beth Post
For many kinesthetic learners, movement is the key to engaging them in learning. Participants will
explore dance and movement concepts and instructional strategies for integration with curriculum
content. This workshop is developed to complement the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater School
Series performance, January 30th at MSU’s Wharton Center and will utilize African-American cultural
experiences – just in time for Black History Month. Beth Post, creative arts teacher and co-author of
Interdisciplinary Learning through Dance: 101 MOVEntures, will present this workshop. Note: Teachers
interested in attending the Alvin Ailey performance should register through Wharton Center (Laurie
Briseno, briseno@msu.edu or 517-353-1982 ext. 141).

Shepherding Students toward Competence and Autonomy

To succeed in the 21st century, students will need to become continuous learners and adept at advocating
for their own learning. Teachers can help by building skills that assist students to identify their needs,
set goals, and understand their learning strengths and styles. Sharon Field, research professor in the
College of Education at Wayne State University and co-director for the Center for Self-Determination
and Transition, will share research and promising practices that suggest strategies educators can adopt
to help more students stay engaged in learning – both during and after their K-12 school years. Note:
Participants will have an opportunity to extend their learning with a “Nuts & Bolts” session from 9:30
– 11:45 a.m. at an additional cost of $25.

Acting Right: Drama as a Classroom Management Strategy

This arts integration workshop takes the foundational elements of acting such as concentration,
cooperation, and collaboration, and creates a structured process which can become the basis for
effective classroom management. The engaging step-by-step approach empowers students to take
ownership of and be responsible for their own behavior. Participants will learn how to help students
build the skills necessary to establish a sense of self-control, accountability and team in the classroom.
Facilitated by Marlo Castillo, member of Kennedy Center’s Changing Education Through the Arts
Program and national workshop presenter for Focus 5, Inc., this workshop will help participants actively
engage their kinesthetic learners.

Living Pictures: Differentiating Instruction and Assessment
through Drama
April 24, 2008 (Arts Workshop) By Marlo Castillo
Taught by Marlo Castillo, member of Kennedy Center’s Changing Education Through the Arts Program
and national workshop presenter for Focus 5, Inc., this arts integration workshop utilizes the creative
technique known as tableau. Participants will learn how to guide students through pre-assessing,
applying, expanding and demonstrating knowledge and understanding of concepts, in all subjects,
by assuming the roles of people and objects to create living pictures. Participants will learn how to
build students’ vocabulary, focus and concentration required for this technique. They will experience
the tableau technique as learners. This engaging technique deepens student comprehension, models
differentiated instruction and assessment, and motivates all types of learners.
