Arts Integration Training for Classroom Teachers

The Kenndy Center defines Arts Integration as an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.

It recognizes arts in schools as three variations:

  1. Arts as Curriculum: arts subjects (often music, visual art, dance, theatre, or media arts) are taught in school guided by national, state, or local standards by an arts specialist. Often referred to as “arts learning” or “art for art’s sake”
  2. Arts-Enhanced Curriculum: the arts are used as a device or strategy to support other curriculum areas, but no objectives in the art form are explicit. This can be used as a “hook” to engage students in learning content.
  3. Arts-Integrated Curriculum: Students meet dual learning objectives when they engage in the creative process to explore connections between an art form and another subject area to gain greater understanding in both.

Wharton Center is proud to continue the tradition of offering training in Arts Integration for current and future classroom teachers.

Facilitated by Garrett Brown

Garrett is a national teaching artist who specializes in cartooning, illustration, and sequential art (comic books). He earned a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Missouri Kansas City, where he resides with his family. He earned a master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri St. Louis.

While Garrett has over a decade of highly qualified experience as an Art Specialist, it is his years as a classroom teacher that give him an appreciation and perspective for designing projects that both students and teachers find engaging and worthwhile.
