Drama, passion and romance are but a few words that express these emotionally-compelling works. Tchaikovsky was a big influence on Shostakovich and Stravinsky, so this concert highlights his influence on two great Russian composers who followed him. First off this palette of musical colors is Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Suite from “Sleeping Beauty,” containing themes that will whisk you away to another world. Following with “fearless technique” (San Francisco Chronicle) is Naumburg winner, cellist David Requiro, performing the virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich. The second half features a four-movement suite, Divertimento, which Stravinsky pulled from his ballet, The Fairy’s Kiss. This Stravinsky piece paid homage to Tchaikovsky, resulting in a rather unique musical language for the composer. Stravinsky incorporated elements of Tchaikovsky’s style into the work, but always through his own Stravinskian lens. Ending the program is Tchaikovsky’s timeless classic, Suite from “Swan Lake,” where you can find the unforgettable melodies associated with this beloved ballet.
